Abstract

Burnout is a syndrome that emerged as a problem in human services professions, but over time it has been adapted to different contexts, including academia. However, there is little literature addressing academic burnout among university students in Ecuador, which is a clear oversight in terms of this population's mental health. Based on the theory of work demands and resources, this research aims to determine the prevalence of academic burnout among university students in the Faculty of Business Sciences at UTMACH and its correlation with different factors. A Spanish adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Students Survey diagnostic tool was used to collect the primary information. Academic burnout is assessed across three dimensions: emotional exhaustion (α = .787), cynicism (α = .854), and academic ineffectiveness (α = .821). Cronbach's alpha values determined good internal consistency and reliability of the instrument for its application in the context of the study sample. The main findings show a balance between the academic demands of the courses in this faculty and the resources available to students, as none were diagnosed with academic burnout. However, the largest number of students were concentrated in the group that perceives itself as disconnected and overloaded. Only an association with the course of study was found, ruling out the influence of other variables on the generation of academic burnout.
