Abstract

Online university education has undergone a significant transformation thanks to the advancement of digital technologies, which have facilitated new forms of teaching and learning. Innovations such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and adaptive learning systems are redefining the educational experience. These technologies not only enable more interactive and immersive learning experiences, but also offer a high degree of personalisation, adapting to the individual needs of students. However, the effective implementation of these tools presents various challenges, such as teacher training, the digital divide, and accessibility for all students, particularly in contexts of technological inequality. Despite these obstacles, educational institutions have started to integrate these emerging technologies into their programmes, improving educational quality, student engagement, and collaboration in virtual environments. Future perspectives point to a continuous evolution of educational technologies, with an emphasis on enhancing digital connectivity, promoting more collaborative learning, and ensuring universal accessibility. However, it will be crucial for universities to develop appropriate strategies to overcome technological and pedagogical barriers, ensuring that online education is inclusive, efficient, and accessible for all students. This article examines the technological innovations, associated challenges, and future perspectives of online learning, providing a comprehensive view of its impact on higher education.
