Abstract

This research aims to analyze the financial stability of the companies that make up the commercial sector in the province of Manabí, through the application of the Altman Z-Score Model, which allows us to know the liquidity situation and the possible risk of bankruptcy of these companies. For this purpose, the financial statements obtained from the database of the Superintendence of Companies are analyzed, in a historical period that goes from 2010 to 2015, delimiting the population to companies registered in the city of Manta and Portoviejo, and by groups G46 wholesale trade and G47 retail trade. The results show that the commercial sector has had a gradual decrease, being 2013 the year with the highest financial insolvency, according to the analysis per canton, Portoviejo keeps more companies in a safe area than Manta, despite this Manta concentrates the highest number of companies. As part of the study by sector, the G46 group has more companies in the healthy zone, demonstrating that the wholesale trade presents better financial solvency indexes, compared to the G47 group.
