Comparison of the Efficacy of Mediterranean and Ketogenic Diets in the Nutritional Treatment of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Diseases
Main Article Content
Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, pose a significant public health challenge due to their high prevalence and devastating impact on patients' quality of life. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of Mediterranean and ketogenic diets in the nutritional treatment of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. The methodology, with a qualitative approach, utilized a systematic review following the PRISMA method to compare the effects of both diets in managing these diseases. Extensive searches were conducted in scientific databases, and the quality of the selected studies was evaluated to ensure reliable and comparable results. The results reveal that the Mediterranean diet shows a reduction in the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and improvement in cognitive function, while the ketogenic diet is noted for its neuroprotection and improvement in motor and cognitive symptoms. Both approaches present unique mechanisms of action and challenges in adherence and side effects. It is concluded that the Mediterranean and ketogenic diets offer distinct benefits in the prevention and management of neurodegenerative diseases; the Mediterranean diet stands out for its high adherence and general positive effects, while the ketogenic diet shows specific benefits in neuroprotection and symptom management.
