Comparison between laparoscopic and open surgery in appendicitis

Abstract

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix that can be treated by two main surgical techniques: laparoscopic surgery and open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery, which is minimally invasive, uses small incisions and a camera to guide the operation. This technique offers several benefits compared to open surgery, including less intraoperative blood loss, faster recovery of gastrointestinal function, shorter operation time, and reduced hospital stay. Additionally, postoperative levels of white blood cells, neutrophils, and C-reactive protein decrease more significantly in laparoscopically treated patients, indicating a lower inflammatory response. On the other hand, open surgery, which involves a larger incision, has been the traditional approach and may be necessary in complicated situations. However, it is associated with longer recovery time, more postoperative pain, and a higher risk of wound infection. A comparative study found that laparoscopic appendectomy was preferred in 66.33% of cases, and patients treated with this technique had shorter hospital stays and returned to their routine activities more quickly compared to those who underwent open surgery. Although laparoscopic surgery faces challenges such as the need for specific technical skills and higher initial costs due to specialized equipment, these costs are often offset by shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
