Advantages and disadvantages of digital repositories in Higher Education institutions

Abstract
The present research aims to explore the advantages and disadvantages of digital repositories in Higher Education institutions, their role in open access initiatives, and the challenges they face in terms of sustainability and preservation. By addressing these key aspects, this study looks to provide insights into the importance of digital repositories in the academic and scientific community. The method used is that of bibliographic review with Mendeley's software as a social bibliographic manager that combines a web version with a desktop version. It incorporates Web 2.0 functionalities that allow you to share bibliographic references with contacts and browse through content uploaded by other users. Automatically extract article metadata and references from PDFs, links: DOI, ISSN, ISBN. It also retrieves other information from Crossref, PubMed, ArXiv, among others (Elsevier, 2022). The results obtained show the main data of repositories worldwide, Latin America, and finally, Ecuador with its web platform managed by CEDIA as the Academic Repository Network of Ecuador (RRAAE).
